March 2009 - The Spiegeltent Shows
Adelaide Fringe Festival Wrap up by Etype

Wow, what a great couple of shows in the Spiegeltent at this year's Adelaide Fringe Festival.   We only wish that we had booked more shows because we're hearing from more and more of you who missed out on tickets.   We're really sorry to all those people who missed out on these shows, and also to those who came along and were very squashed!

Thank you to everyone who came along, it was such a great 2 nights for us. The venue is so gorgeous and atmospheric, it was such a perfect opportunity for us to reveal our “new look” thanks to the fabulous team at Tempest. We've never felt more glamorous!!!!!!

The most exciting thing for us was to see the response to our new material; it's always a bit nerve racking to perform something new for the very first time, so thank you for your wonderful comments! There'll be some snippets from the show on MySpace and YouTube for people who couldn't come along.

We are also delighted with the continuing development of our relationship with the talented young musicians of the Pembroke “etype” orchestra. They are so professional and really enhanced the show. It was a great experience for them too and they are very lucky to have such a fine conductor, Mr. Tony Paye, who is also a great jazz musician and really understands what was required. So, watch this space, as we look for more opportunities to work together in the future. We'd also like to thank Matthew Carey for his great string arrangements featured on the night.

We're looking forward to a busy April, with a tour up to the Flinders Ranges via the Barossa (with Vince Jones) and the Port Augusta Jazz and Blues festival. It'll be great to head up to the middle of our state again. Then in May we're excited to do an intimate Adelaide show with Joe Chindamo, from Melbourne. Look out for more information on that one, coming soon…. It'll be GREAT!

Thanks again for your support – we couldn't do what we do, without you.

Love Etype
xx

2008 FRINGE REVIEW

Mar 03 2008 SOCO CARGO CLUB;

2008 Adelaide Fringe Festival
29 March 2008
Independent Weekly; Melissa Mack
In the red evening glow of the SoCo Cargo club Etypejazz played their first show back in their hometown Adelaide to a sell-out crowd. It was easy to see why. Playing mostly new songs from their upcoming album, the band opened with the upbeat songs "Phoney" and "Let the good times roll", getting the audience into the mood. Lead singer Katrina Ryan captured the audience with her smooth voice and warm smile, while the highlight of the show was "Half the man", a mellow song written by double bass player Mike Haynes.
Ryan and saxophonist Beth Lyon engaged the audience with tales of their recent travels, which clearly influenced their music and style with a sexy New York feel. Pianist Matthew Carey on the keyboard and charismatic Barnabas Smith on the drums complete the five-piece band. Etypejazz has incredible stage presence with their incredible talent displayed through solos. Already critically acclaimed, Eytpejazz will continue to win over audiences. Watch out for their new album or see them at SoCo Cargo until March 9.

ETYPE IN USA

Jan 28 2008

It was a chilly 24 degrees (F) here in New York at 8.30am this morning. Pretty brisk, but OH what a town ! This place just gets better and better – what’s not to love about it?
We performed at 'Jazz at the Lincoln Centre' to some 600 dignitaries and celebrities. The glass wall behind us looked out onto Columbus Circle and Central Park – with the city lights of Manhattan in the distance. It was beautiful, and truly an amazing experience. We'll have some photos of the night in our photo gallery soon!
The news of Heath Ledger’s death came through 5mins before the event started and cast a wave of sadness over the evening as some of his personal friends (John Travolta for one) were there performing also that evening, and were clearly saddened by this tragedy, as we all were.
However, in true entertainment style – the show must go on, and performances were also done by David Campbell, Eskimo Joe, Jamie Durie, Shannon Noll, Christine Anu, Terri and Bindi Irwin, John Travolta, the Australian Dance Theatre and the cast of Xanadu. - It was a fabulous night. Check out a YoutTube snippet of the night on our website over the next few days.
Beth and Katrina became the ‘fabulous girls in the red dresses’ - and around the bar that night at our hotel (The Waldorf Astoria no less), they had many good laughs with the rest of the Aussie performers.
The Waldorf Astoria is an amazing hotel – so much history – especially in music. We spent the first night crowded around the original Steinway grand piano on which Cole Porter composed many of the worlds most famous songs.
We headed over to Birdland the other night for the weekly 'cast party' held, which invites musicians up on stage in open mic style performances. Mike, Matthew and Katrina performed Mikes song; If You Were Me to a full room of people in this world famous club and had the best time. The song was receieved with such great enthusiasm - Mike is still walking up with the clouds !
You'll be able to check this one out on our website too when we get a chance to put it up over the next couple of days.
New York is truly a magical city!
Last night, we had dinner with the beautiful Jessica Alba before performing in the main ballroom of the Waldorf Astoria for the Black Tie Gala dinner. This room has seen so many world famous events and seated many of the great Jazz performers over the years as Frank Sinatra, Lena Horne, Cole Porter, Tony Bennett, Ella Fitzerald, the Gershwins, Benny Goodman and many more I'm sure.
Julian McMahon was presented with an Entertainment award, Baz Lurhman talked about his new movie 'Australia' via live cross on the big screens and Shannon Noll, Christine Anu, the Pembroke Orchestra and the Qantas Choir all performed to over 1000 people in this amazing ballroom.
The aftershow party was a blast, Ian Parmenter jumped up with his harp to play a song with us and the room was jumping. The last event for Australia Week, everyone let their hair down and had a great time. Our final song was Waltzing Matilda - Etype style and the roof nearly came down with cheer and singing from all of the Aussies in the room.
We'll have a series of videos up on our site soon with all of the highlights from the shows we've done in Los Angeles and New York. So, off to the airport now for the long haul home........
For those of you here in the USA - we've enjoyed your lovely cities once again and look forward to returning again soon. To our friends in Australia - See you soon !!
Love Katrina, Beth, Mike, Matthew and Barn. Etype x
